Riding-Rain-Ropes ‘n Halters

I had yet another riding lesson yesterday. I rode Buddy again, poor guy, he was really wet.

It was raining, or misting. It was like this cloud of perpetual mist that never went away. So when we went out to catch our horses we had to walk through like 5-6 inch deep mud and fresh you-know-what. ;)

Then we took them in and towel dried them off, and brushed them down. This helps to dry horses as well.

Apparently Chris has been sold, WAH! So they are using a new horse, Pete. He is a bay, and so adorably cute and curious!

He is so cute though, we were doing obstacles in the indoor arena this time. One of them was where you had to walk your horse through this L shape, then back him out. Sounds easy huh? No way Jose! (that is a Spanish word, and they pronounce their J’s like we do our H’s. So it sounds like “Hosay”.) None of us excelled at that.

The next one is horseshoe gathering. Basically you ride around the rail and pick up horseshoes, then drop them off in a bucket. Also easy huh? Are you kidding?!?! Not only is keeping your horse close enough to the rail very difficult but those horse shoes weigh a ton! And they are hooked on. I did pretty good at that though.

The third one is the mailbox. What they have done is mounted up a mailbox on a platform so that it is at arm level to a person on the horse. You have to ride up and try to get your horse lined up just right so that you can reach in and get the mail.

And the fourth was the flags. In this one you have to ride your horse up to a barrel where there is a bucket containing flags. While riding you grab one, and ride over to another barrel and deposit the flag in the bucket on top of that one.

Well anyway, Pete was so adorable. He didn’t want to touch anything or go anywhere until he knew what he was getting into. So he went up and was sniffing the flags, like a puppy, and was biting at them with his mouth. It was so cute! I think I get to have him next week.

Miss Emma told us that the day before he had been doing the mailbox, and he was curious. So instead of pulling up beside the mailbox, he walked straight up to it and touched the lid with his nose. It flew open and freaked him out. Cutie pie!
